"The perfect follow-up to Krakauer's riveting account of a perfect storm."
--Miami Herald
"Kodas's absorbing description of the narrow moral compass governing human interaction at the top of the world is bound to shock both armchair adventurers and seasoned mountaineers."
--C! hicago Tribune
"(Kodas) discovered more deceit! , thieve ry, and double-crossing among his climbers than you find in a Martin Scorsese gangster film. High Crimes is both an adventure story and an exposé of a sport riddled with danger and corruption."
--Washington Post Book World
"Kodas's descriptions of the struggles confronting even the best-prepared climbers leave the reader breathless."
--Dallas Morning News
"[High Crimes] is hair-raising and lays bare the excitement and fear that face great explorers at the top of the world. . . . Well written, and as deftly plotted as the finest mystery novel, Kodas brings to life a disturbing picture of society at high altitude."
--Austin Chronicle
"Kodas does an excellent job exposing the ways in which money and ego have corrupted the traditional cultures of both mountaineers and their Sherpa guides. . . . His narrative is as hard to turn away from as a slow-motion train wreck."
--Publishers Weekly!
High Crimes is journalist Michael Kodas's gripping account of life on top of the world--where man is every bit as deadly as Mother Nature.
Ashley Judd stars as Claire Kubik, a high-powered attorney whose perfect life comes down when her husband is charged with high crimes of murder. Enlisting the aid of a shrewd military lawyer (Morgan Freeman), Claire will risk her career and even her life to find the truth in this "head-snapping thriller" (Milwaukee Journal Sentinel).A welcomed reunion of Kiss the Girls costars Ashley Judd and Morgan Freeman makes High Crimes a worthwhile thriller with vivid, likable characters. Efficiently directed by Carl Franklin, this military mystery doesn't have the unpredictable edginess of Franklin's Devil in a Blue Dress, but its twisting plot is sure to hold anyone's attention. Judd plays a successful, happily married lawyer whose husband (Jim Caviezel) is accused of killing innocent citizens during his ! military service in El Salvador some 13 years earlier. A cover! -up impl icates a powerful Brigadier General (Bruce Davison), but when Judd hires a maverick attorney (Freeman), Judd is caught in a potentially lethal trap of threats and deception. Attentive viewers will stay ahead of the action, and alleged villains are posed as obvious decoys. Still, Judd and Freeman have an appealing rapport (shared with Amanda Peet, playing Judd's vivacious sister), and Freeman's character flaws add worldly spice to yet another rich performance. --Jeff ShannonMeet Claire Heller Chapman. A criminal defense attorney whoâs made a name for herself by taking onâ"and winningâ"the toughest cases, Claire still manages to have a relatively calm life as a Harvard Law School professor, devoted wife, and proud mother to six-year-old Annie. Until one night, when the family is out having dinner, a team of government agents bursts onto the sceneâ¦heading straight for Claireâs husband.
Tom Chapman has been arrested for an atrocious crime he swe! ars he did not commit. Claire is desperate to believe himâ"and prove his innocenceâ"even when she learns that Tom once had a different name. And a different face. Now, in a top-secret court-martial conducted by the Pentagon, Claire will put everything on the line to defend the man she loves. But as the evidence keeps piling up, the less she knows who her husband really isâ¦and the more he appears to be a cold-blooded murderer.

O n the first day of Royal Ascot, the world's most famous horse race, the crowd rejoices in a string of winning favorites. Ned Talbot has worked all his life as a bookmaker- taking over the family business from his grandfather- so he knows not to expect any sympathy from the punters as they count their winnings, and he his losses. He's seen the ups and downs before-but, as the big gambling conglomerates muscle in on small concerns like his, Ned wonders if it's worth it any more.
When a gray-haired man steps forward from the crowd claiming to be his father, Ne! d's life is thrown into far deeper turmoil. He'd been told since he was a baby that his parents had died in a car crash.
Barely an hour later, his newly found father is stabbed by an unknown assailant in the Ascot parking lot. Blood oozing from his abdomen, his father warns Ned to "be very careful." But of whom? Of what? Ned finds himself in a race to solve his father's riddle-a race where coming in second could cost him more than even money-it could cost him his life. . . .Ned Talbot is a small-time bookmaker on the edge of giving it all up when his world is turned upside down by a man who claims to be his father, long thought dead. And when the mysterious stranger is murdered, Ned feels compelled to find out exactly what is going on. But the more he discovers, the longer the odds become for his survival.Ned Talbot is a small-time bookmaker on the edge of giving it all up when his world is turned upside down by a man who claims to be his father, long thought dead. ! And when the mysterious stranger is murdered, Ned feels compel! led to f ind out exactly what is going on. But the more he discovers, the longer the odds become for his survival.Forest Whitaker, Kim Basinger, Danny Devito, Kelsey Grammer and Ray Liotta star in director Mark Rydell's ensemble addiction drama detailing the manner in which gambling and drugs affect a variety of people's lives during the weeks leading up to a championship college basketball game. The lure of easy cash drives the interlocking storylines of Easy Money, an all-star tale of gamblers, bookies, and gangsters. The movie draws together a blocked novelist addicted to the slots (Kim Basinger, L.A. Confidential), a magician on the skids (Danny DeVito, Get Shorty), a bookie with stress-induced stomach problems (Jay Mohr, Jerry Maguire), a debt-ridden plumber (Forest Whitaker, The Last King of Scotland) who persuades his basketball-playing brother (Nick Cannon, Love Don't Cost a Thing) to shave points, and a gangster by turns mincing and m! enacing (Tim Roth, Reservoir Dogs). Tying them all together is a murder investigation conducted by a detective on crutches (an unrecognizable Kelsey Grammer, X-Men: The Last Stand). Even Money never achieves the raw, spontaneous energy of a Robert Altman movie (clearly an influence) or the social complexity of Crash (produced by the same company), but individual scenes and actors (particularly Whitaker as he twists his brother's affection to perverse ends) have an impact. Unfortunately, the movie never grips the viewer with the rush of winning or the knife-twist of losing; without that visceral punch, Even Money feels inauthentic and a little preachy. Also featuring Ray Liotta (Goodfellas) as Basinger's long-suffering husband and Carla Gugino (Snake Eyes) as a nurse in love with a brutal debt collector. --Bret Fetzer462 pp. 6 1/2 x 9 1/2. Media Type: DVDA man is frightened to death by a menacing military helicopter, piloted by two young Texan men who just happen to be the dead man's stepsons, Dorian and Angus (Luke Wilson and Jake Busey). To complicate matters, the dead man had had an affair with young Sally (Drew Barrymore), a clerk at the local Burger-Matic who didn't know the guy was married. ! Now she's pregnant and looking for a supportive guy to be her unborn child's potential father. Dorian fits the role quite nicely, but Angus thinks Sally knows about the helicopter incident, and their scheming mother (Catherine O'Hara) is trying to mastermind a cover-up, and....
So goes the cleverly amusing plot of this light, character-based romantic comedy, which proves Barrymore's charm and versatility once again, gives O'Hara one of her best roles, and moves right along at its own amiable pace. Small-town romance combines with darkly tinged comedy (scripted by X-Files staffer Vince Gilligan), and first-time director Dean Parisot guides it all with casual assurance. There's nothing going on here that's particularly inspired, but Barrymore and Wilson (an off-screen couple during production) make a delightful pair, and the cast makes the most of some hilarious down-home dialogue. All in all, a very pleasant diversion. --Jeff ShannonGrunge rock. Fast food.! And da family. What's not to love? Next, Hugh Grant walks the wawk and talks the tawk as Mickey Blue Eyes (Disc 2). He becomes Noo Yawk's most unlikely mobster when his romance with a schoolteacher (Jeanne Tripplehorn) entangles him in the workings of her mob family (headed by James Caan).Summer Catch Rock Star Home Fries Addicted to LoveJoin the Pattersons for a volume full of hilarious and touching cartoon fun in Keep the Home Fries Burning. Tru Newman is one of the Upper East Side âM&Msââ"the wealthy stay-at-home moms who are into personal Maintenance and Mothering. Having been raised by a beauty queen mother who constantly picked on her, Tru loves looking after her investment banker husband, Peter, and their twin teen daughters. But her perfect world spins off its axis the night Tru throws a charity benefit and discovers that Peterâs been out of work for three months. Even worse, the familyâs been living on a house of cardsâ"specifically, Visa and Amexâ"thatâs about t! o collapse.
Suze Orman tells Tru to âGet a job!â B! ut doing what? When Truâs best friend, Sienna Post, loses her position as an anchor on the local nightly news, the two hatch a profitable if illegal plan: Theyâll open an escort service with âworking girlsâ all over the age of forty. Modeling themselves on Carla Bruni (âafter she married the president of France, not before, when she was dating Mick Jaggerâ), their smart, sexy, seasoned escorts become a big hit with a roster of thirty-year-old clients.
If only Truâs legit life could fall so easily into place: Her husbandâs new job has him working side by side with a flirtatious neighbor, her fourteen-year-old twins are competing over a two-timing, Clearasil-using Casanova, and after suffering a heart attack in her bodybuilding class, Truâs hypercritical mother moves in with her. Not to mention that the gossip columns get wind that Tru and Siennaâs âtemp agencyâ isnât on the up-and-upâ"and the DA is on their case.Â
But for the savvy and spir! ited Tru, these new obstacles bring unexpected benefitsâ"from Geisha facials, to massage toys that are âbetter than chocolate,â to the realization that at midlife, sheâs more comfortable than ever before in her own skin and more grateful for all that she has. By turns touching and laugh-out-loud funny, this is a must-read for every woman who knows itâs never too late to make a fresh start.
